— Chicago lyricist Defcee has released his latest LP, For All Debts Public and Private, with the help of in-house producer, BoatHouse.
Defcee, a staple in Chicago’s Hip-Hop and poetry scene, came up through Young Chicago Authors, where he eventually ran rap and poetry workshops. Over the past 10 years he’s released a steady flow of music and has since broken further into the underground rap scene with his 2021 project, Trapdoor. Now, the gifted wordsmith is back with his debut project under the Closed Sessions record label, For All Debts Public and Private.
The project, fully produced by Closed Sessions in-house producer BoatHouse, features some of the hardest boom bap production you’ll hear today. Honing in on this classic style of production can seem like a risky move in today’s climate, but BoatHouse put on quite a show making every track its own with his creative use of sounds and emphatic, well-placed drums further elevating Defcee’s lyrics.
With BoatHouse on the production, Defcee came through and feasted on the assortment of top-tier beats he was given to work with. On each and every track he delivers highly compelling verses filled with gripping subject matter, elite lyrical precision, tons of hidden gems, and emotion you can feel through the speakers. When speaking on the project, Defcee stated,
“BoatHouse has been one of my favorite producers for nearly a decade. It was an honor to collaborate with him on a project with stakes as high as this one. It’s because I knew how bright the spotlight would be here that I decided to showcase every chamber of my rapping and songwriting, from the abstract pockets to the punchline-heavy, intricate rhyme schemes I used to make my name in the city. The title of the album is a thesis statement about the intention of the music I made on this album — to address what I owe to the scene, to those I love, and to those who have believed in me for the fifteen years I’ve been making and releasing music.”
For All Debts Public and Private also includes contributions from some of the most formidable rappers on the underground scene including Armand Hammer, SolarFive, greenSLLLIME, and fellow label mates Kipp Stone and Mother Nature.
