Hailing from the West Coast, rapper and producer imKENNETHY is heavily influenced by his instrumental background in piano and percussion, as well as his love for Hip-Hop that started in his adolescent years. This led the multi-talented artist to quickly develop an understanding of production and what makes a song tick, thus starting his music making career in 2018.
After starting out making Lofi beats, he then started exploring sample-based classic, boom bap production before developing his own sound. Through listening to alternative Hip-Hop and Lofi, imKennethy began creating his own unique beats for himself to eventually release his debut in 2020.
Since then, imKennethy has continued to grow. Amassing a significant audience on Spotify with hit songs like “STOP!”, featured on his debut EP, DOWN LOW has given imKENNETHY the confidence to continue flourishing, leading to his newest single “WYA”.
Arguably his most polished track to date, “WYA” immediately pulls you in with its relaxed jazz infused production consisting of a bold brass section and elegant piano melody.
Speaking more about the meaning behind “WYA”, imKENNETHY says,
“This song talks about the soul-searching I do when facing adversity and hardship in my life — hence the title — as I’m looking for the person that I want to be and wondering if I can get him back. Writing this felt like a meditation or mental exercise, as I tried to dig deep into my true motivations and intentions behind my actions and desires.”
After now finding and refining his sound and what works best for him, it will be fun to see where imKENNETHY goes next. Nonetheless, he’s definitely an artist to look out for.
