— Atlanta rapper Lacy the Great recruits Troy Fayola for his latest single, “LOCS”, and its infectiously vibey music video.

For those who live in or frequent the city of Atlanta, you know that it’s impossible to go outside for 24 hours without running into someone with locs (also known as dreads, locks, or dreadlocks). Though many may see them simply as a hairstyle, countless others have a deep connection with their locs on a personal, ancestral, and even spiritual level. With this community being so strong and with so many Hip-Hop artists sporting the hairstyle, it’s quite surprising that there isn’t more music that references locs. Now, thanks to rappers Lacy the Great and Troy Fayola, we finally do and it’s an undeniable jam.

“LOCS”, produced by osvma, starts off with a soothing bass guitar groove accompanied by a smooth and jazzy drum cadence led by a knocking bass drum and snapping rimshots. Flawlessly matching the vibe, Lacy the Great comes through with an incredibly catchy hook that is sure to be stuck in your head for the next week. The good news is, you’ll enjoy every bit of it.

Lacy follows his hook up with a solid verse that touches on quite a bit including the struggle of having to wait patiently for your locs to have some ‘hang time’. He also refers to some of the more prominent ‘loc wearers’ in our culture such as Lil Wayne and Whoopi Goldberg.

Next up on the track is none other than prolific wordsmith, Troy Fayola. Coming off a series of emphatic freestyles —  including her “Women’s History Month Freestyle”, June’s “Vivrant Thing Freestyle”, and even her episode of More Bars Please last year — it was clear that she didn’t come to play. On “LOCS”, Troy Fayola delivers a wide-ranging verse that, while remaining on topic, somehow still incorporates themes of Black love, divine purpose, cultural healing, and Black empowerment making it one of her strongest verses to date.

The music video, shot by R3BIRTH PRODUCTIONS, was a masterpiece to say the least as the featured artists host the dopest loc party you’ve ever seen. Along with great visual storytelling, the captivating lighting and creative editing throughout the video brought everything home.
