— Following the release of his collaborative project with THERAVADA this past August, YUNGMORPHEUS now shares his latest EP, Burnished Sums.
LA-based rapper YUNGMORPHEUS releases his new six-track EP Burnished Sums via Lex Records. The commanding tracks offer a look at MORPH’s continued growth as an artist with a singular style, taking it upon himself to orchestrate the musical direction of the EP and diving into topics such as police brutality, reflecting on his status within the underground rap world, and broader observations of the human experience. Burnished Sums marks YUNGMORPHEUS’ first project this year that features multiple producers, including the likes of Joe Armon-Jones, Creme, DMH & YUNGMORPHEUS himself.
Rather than his previous two projects from this year which were collaborations alongside a single producer, YUNGMORPHEUS took the sonic direction into his own hands, dictating a more diverse array of sounds that challenges his technical prowess. The EP arrives in the midst of MORPHEUS’ European tour run, with select dates in support of Billy Woods and Clipping respectively, and includes the previous singles “Distant Place,” “Figure-Four Leg Lock,” and “Sonny’s Triangle,” which received praise in NPR’s Heat Check and Consequence’s Rap Song of the Week columns.
A close collaborator of artists like Pink Siifu, Moor Mother, Eyedress and ewonee, MORPH is part of a scene breaking antiquated notions about underground rap as something that has to be stuffy or overly didactic, imbuing his songs with caustic humor and vivid details. MORPH enlists friends and collaborators on the new project including a verse from Goya Gumbani and production credits from Creme, DMH, and Morph himself. Burnished Sums follows his latest collaborative project with THERAVADA, Up Against the Wall, by a matter of weeks, but this EP sees MORPH in a more insular headspace.
