— Richmond, VA product Fly Anakin drops “No Dough”, his latest song and visual, after announcing the release date of his debut album, Frank, via Lex Records.
Fly Anakin is coming off of a stellar 2021 where the core member of the Richmond-based Mutant Academy collective gained significant popularity following his self-produced EP, Pixote (which Stereogum called “a lovely and insular work of deep head-nod rap); his critically-acclaimed joint album with Pink Siifu, FlySiifu’s, along with their follow up, $mokebreak EP; and his two widely-acclaimed late 2021 singles, “Ghost” and “Sean Price”. Now, Anakin sets his sights on his official debut studio album, Frank, set to include both of the latter singles along with his latest, “No Dough”.
With production by none other than legendary music producer Madlib, the rising star had no choice but to come with his best bars and he did just that. Clocking in just under 2 minutes, “No Dough” is a concise reflection of Anakin’s journey to this point as he chronicles his humble beginnings before realizing his own worth and making that intent clear.
Directed by Skyler Vander Molen, the music video is a rapidly unfolding visual featuring Fly Anakin as he conducts a sly and slick-handed scheme to take back what’s his. The one-shot film hi-jacks your attention span from start to finish as it uses gripping cinematic elements, chaotic scenery, and creative edits to tell a complete and captivating story in such little time.
Frank is set to drop on Friday, March 11th. The debut studio album from Fly Anakin will be a bold statement, not only as a technically-gifted rapper, but as a fully-realized artist and songwriter. According to reports from Anakin’s camp, Frank experiments with expectation as Anakin draws influence from the classic R&B and Soul his dad played for him at a formative age while continuing to deliver the riveting raps that he always has — evident from his latest offering, “No Dough”.
