— Following the release of Polo Smoke 2, Jodye Joe releases his second project of the year, When Life Brings You Lemons.
Representing the popular Gulf Coast city of Pensacola, rapper Jodye Joe is one of the more special talents coming out of North Florida’s underground Hip-Hop scene. With a unique arsenal of freeform flows, witty bars, and a great ear for bouncy production perfectly fitting for his style, he’s definitely someone to keep an eye on. Now, with the release of his latest EP, When Life Brings You Lemons, the Pensacola product delivers the perfect project to cap off the summer.
When Life Brings You Lemons, solely produced by the aptly named lemonboijay, features the light and airy production that Jodye Joe has made his bread and butter. Equipped with pillowy flute melodies and other ethereal sounds tied together by booming 808 cadences, the project as a whole is as cohesive as can be with each track still having their own identities.
With the production being laid the way it is, the stage was perfectly set for Jodye Joe to do what he does and he certainly didn’t disappoint. Throughout the project, Jodye Joe deploys his signature laid-back, freeform flow — reminiscent of fellow Gulf Coast rapper, Curren$y — while also kicking some rapid-fire bars on tracks like “Refreshing.”
Jodye Joe’s knack for dropping clever hooks and one-liners was also showcased throughout the EP. The brilliantly titled opening track, “Semicolon,” features the catchy half-sung hook,
“I just keep it goin’ (keep it goin’)
Never have I ever been in position to stop my motion
I’m kinda like a semicolon
Even when the sentence end, I still got more comin’ in”
When Life Brings You Lemons follows Jodye Joe’s 4/20 project, Polo Smoke 2, as well as a bevy of singles and loosies — even making an appearance last year on episode 28 of our More Bars Please series last year.
With an output as consistent as Jodye’s it’s fair to say we’ll be hearing from him again very soon and I’m definitely looking forward to it.
