— Atlanta native, MgnBlak, gets deep in his gripping single, “In My Head,” and drops new visuals alongside it.

While Atlanta does have an incredibly diverse collection of sounds along with plenty of top tier wordsmiths, it’s safe to say we aren’t quite known for it (one of our many reasons for starting our More Bars Please series). With that being said, underground rapper and Atlanta native, MgnBlak, has high hopes of changing that narrative.

MgnBlak has a knack for delivering powerful introspective messages in the form of witty wordplay and captivating hooks. One of his latest singles, “In My Head,” does just that.

“In My Head,” produced by OUHBOY, starts off with a somber church choir vocal sample backed by a dramatic, and equally chilling, organ melody. Eventually, when the choir comes to a close, the organ continues to carry the production while a trunk-shaking bass drum cadence, snapping snares, and rattling hi-hats were introduced to the party.

Once the stage is set, MgnBlak comes through and says everything the beat couldn’t. Kicking things of with a melodic hook, he croons,

“I swear I done tried to change,

But everyday I try to hide my pain.”

From there, MgnBlak only gets more intense, yet increasingly vulnerable, as he details the many thoughts, memories, and past decisions that plague his mind. Still, even as he runs through these thoughts, his prayer in between verses 1 and 2, as well as his apparent confidence in where his musical talents can take him, signify that MgnBlak continues to have the faith, hope, and most importantly, the drive to push forward.

The “In My Head” music video, shot by Kartel Filmz, is simple at first glance, but serves as an eerily accurate depiction of MgnBlak’s lyrics. Utilizing the subtly chilling effects of liminal spaces, MgnBlak appears alone in every scene with his complete isolation symbolizing him being “in his own head” in a “Twilight Zone-esque” sort of way.
