— Singer & songwriter Michi releases her debut album Dirty Talk on Stones Throw Records.
Produced by Blake Rhein (of Durand Jones & the Indications) and Paul Cherry, Dirty Talk melds retro and fresh sounds while grappling with forces that interfere with us truly giving and receiving love.
Each track on the album showcases Michi’s passion for ’80s and ’90s R&B and Motown, reimagined with her own modern touch. The album came together when Michi moved from LA to a small seaside town following a harrowing breakup. There, she decided to move with her, “natural emotional circadian rhythm.”
“’Dirty Talk’ isn‘t just about dishing out. It’s about revealing the dirt on my hands of misunderstanding life’s gifts – the opportunity to transform, grow and release. I want this album to accompany whoever hears it in liberation of the self, in healing.” — Michi
The album includes previous singles, “Playing Pretend,” Michi’s “baddie” track, “If You Want Me,” simmering with tension and desire, “There’s No Heaven,” pulsing with house-driven energy, and “Snoobie,” a slow-burning groove wrapped in warmth. The latter three were remixed by Knxwledge in November.
Stones Throw labelmates join Michi on Dirty Talk’s most tender songs: Kiefer plays keys on “Way I Do,” a “rejection of optimism,” and Brazilian bossa nova artist Gabriel da Rosa features on “Memmy (Recuerdo).” Da Rosa sings in Portuguese, while Michi’s lyrics in Spanish — translating to “My only mission is to remember” — nod to her Latin background.
Michi will be performing a celebratory album release show at the Moroccan Lounge in Los Angeles on April 10th.
