— Rapper Troy Fayola closes out Black History Month with a heartfelt tribute to Tyre Nichols just over a month after his tragic killing.
At its core, Hip-Hop has always been a voice of the people. More specifically, Hip-Hop is a voice for those who are often voiceless. Unfortunately, some topics aren’t the easiest to face, but finding moments to reflect and heal are a part of the journey. Today, we stand in the wake of one of these moments and Hip-Hop artist Troy Fayola guides us through it with her new song and visual dedicated to Tyre Nichols titled, “Black Man.”
Choosing to highlight love and joy more so than the apparent pain we are all feeling, Troy shares some of the many things that make Black men great. Furthermore, she expresses the undying support that Black women have always had and always will have for Black men.
The music video, shot by Larimar Media, takes place at UniTea Café on Atlanta’s West End and further cements Troy Fayola’s message. With talented Atlanta-based painter Abdul Barnes literally serving as an example of Black men’s excellence as he paints in the background, images of Martin Luther King, Malcolm X, Muhammad Ali, and Tupac serve as a reminder of the greats before us.
The music video also features members of Atlanta’s The Black Women’s Lab quoting Troy’s lyrics, “I’m a Black Woman and I approve this message.” — more evidence of Black women’s love and support of Black men.
The music video ends with a touching video montage of Tyre Nichols as he enjoys one of his favorite hobbies — skateboarding.
